Transformers & Adapters
All electrical appliances ordered from us are sourced from the USA (unless specifically stated) and will usually have a two-pin North American style plug. New Zealand uses 230V at 50Hz with Type I outlets. While many items are rated 110–240V, it is extremely important to verify that you use the correct adapter or transformer for your particular item.
Depending on the item, you need either an adapter or a transformer. If the item is rated 110–240V, you usually only need a plug adapter to fit a New Zealand Type I socket. If the item is rated only 110–120V, you need a step-down transformer because New Zealand mains power is 230V.
An adapter only changes the plug shape (for example USA to New Zealand Type I) and does not change voltage. A transformer is required for items rated only for 110–120V systems. It steps New Zealand 230V mains down to 110V so the device can operate safely.
You need to know the wattage of your device in order to determine the appropriate voltage converter to purchase so look on the indications label of the device for the W (Watt) to get this information. Be sure to buy a converter with a wattage rating that is higher than the device you plan to operate in order to safely convert.
Example: If your device or appliance is 600W, get a converter or transformer that is 1000W.
For items that need a big surge of power when it's initially switched on (TVs, power tools, laser printers), get a converter with a wattage rate that is THREE times greater than that of your device. So, a 500W tool requires a 1500W converter in order to safely and successfully convert.
Can't find the wattage on your device? Some power labels provide amps. Multiply voltage by amps: V x A = W. Example 110V x 5A = 550W
