Set in Australia during the settlement period. Eugenia arrives from England to meet/marry her fiance who is convinced that wine vineyards are the path to wealth in the Colony. Being a proper young English woman, Eugenia has much to adjust to: the climate, convict labor, new social values and mores being established. She makes a proper wife and mother, but as with most marriages, this one isn't perfect. Her husband, Gilbert, couldn't be more different from Eugenia if he tried....he's not a bad man, just more rugged and in love with Australia, something Eugenia is not.
Enter handsome/empathetic Irishman who sweeps Eugenia off her feet. Now decisions have to be made, commitments reevaluated and hearts broken.
As with most Eden books, at the core of the story is the choices we make in life and the consequences they bring. She never makes a moral proclamation or judgment, but simply explores different paths we can take in life. Above all, Eden reminds us that we are not alone in our daily problems and travails....her characters reveal themselves to be so much like us, the reader. I suppose that's what makes them "comfort reads."
