• Spin-on is the quicker format to service. The whole filter comes off as one unit and a new one goes on, with no canister to open, no element to handle and no gasket to seat separately. That makes it the format most service engineers prefer when they have a round of burners to get through.
• The nozzle is what this protects. An oil burner nozzle meters fuel through an opening measured in thousandths of an inch, machined for a specific spray pattern at a specific rate. Anything that gets past the filter either blocks that opening or wears it out of shape, and a worn nozzle burns badly long before it fails outright.
• Tank sediment is the usual culprit rather than the oil itself. Water condenses inside a tank through the warm months, rust forms on the walls, and sludge settles at the bottom. Then the level drops in deep winter, the pickup draws closer to that sediment, and it all heads for the burner in the coldest week.
