• THE FOREST FLOOR, NOT THE CHRISTMAS TREE: Most pine candles are one note - cut fir, sharp and thin. This opens on Green, Incense and Pine together. Green is a perfumer's term for the smell of a broken stem, and with Incense beside it you get resin, bark and cold air rather than a wreath. Cedarwood and Fir warm the middle, Musk and Patchouli ground it in damp earth. Seven notes, three layers - a whole forest rather than a single tree. Most pine candles stop at the first one.
• A BIGGER JAR BUYS YOU TIME, NOT VOLUME: 539 g of wax and up to 80 hours of burning, from one wooden wick. That wick throws across roughly 200 sq ft whatever size jar it sits in - so what the extra wax buys is months instead of weeks, not a louder candle. Anyone telling you a heavier jar automatically scents a bigger room is selling you wax you cannot smell. If you need to cover more floor, use two candles rather than one heavy one. The wick sets the reach; the wax sets the life.
• NEVER TRIM THIS WICK. NOT WITH ANYTHING: This is a laminated wooden wick, not cotton. Scissors, wick trimmers, nail clippers and pinching all delaminate the layers and the flame dies. If a burnt edge builds up, let the candle cool completely and break the carbon off with your fingers or a folded paper towel, leaving the wood at about an eighth of an inch. That is the whole of the maintenance. Ignore any instruction anywhere that tells you to cut it.
• THE FIRST BURN DECIDES EVERY BURN AFTER IT: Wooden wicks have memory. Burn for three to four hours the first time, until melted wax reaches the glass right across the surface. Do that once and the candle keeps burning edge to edge for its whole life. Stop short and it sinks a narrow shaft and strands wax on the walls, which is the single most common reason a good candle gets called a bad one. A jar this size needs the longer end of that first burn. Give it the time once and then forget about it.
• FOUR HOURS MAXIMUM, EVERY TIME: Put it out at four hours and let it cool before relighting. A jar candle burned far beyond that heats the glass through, and heat is cumulative - the base gets hotter the longer it runs. Stop when about half an inch of wax is left rather than burning it dry. Always on a level heat-safe surface, never on a shelf under something that can catch, never unattended and never overnight. This is the rule that matters most on this page.
• UP TO 80 HOURS OF EVOLVING FOREST: 539 g of hybrid soy-blend wax and a hardwood wick, burn-tested to 80 hours under quality control on production stock rather than on a prototype. Treat that as a ceiling rather than a promise: what you get depends on draft, room temperature and session length. Short frequent burns will not get near it; sessions of three to four hours in a still room will. A draft costs you hours over the life of the jar, and a lid left off costs you the top notes.
• SEVEN NOTES, AND YOU CAN FOLLOW THEM: Bright Green, Incense and Pine hold the first hour. Cedarwood and Fir come forward through the middle, which is where the candle stops smelling like a wreath and starts smelling like a timber cabin. Musk and Patchouli settle underneath for the last third and stay in the room after the flame is out. A single-note pine smells the same from the first minute to the last. This one does not, and that movement is the whole point of a layered oil.
• 10% FRAGRANCE OIL AND A HYBRID SOY BLEND: A tenth of the jar by weight is fragrance - the practical ceiling for a soy blend, above which oil separates and pools instead of binding. The wax is a soy blend, which matters more with resinous notes than with sweet ones: Incense and Patchouli are heavy molecules and a cooler wooden wick carries them without scorching. Keep the wick short and the flame steady and it burns cleanly. Soot on the glass means the wick is too long or the flame is in a draft.
• THE VOLCANO JAR - TEAL MATTE GLASS AND A BRUSHED METAL LID: A wide, low jar 5 inches across and 4 inches tall, in matte teal rather than gloss, so it takes fingerprints far less and reads as an object rather than as packaging.
