The Bible tells us that Mary of Bethany anointed Jesus' feet before the Last Supper with Spikenard. John 12:3 reads, Å“Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. Spikenard was also mentioned in the Song of Solomon, and was regularly used by the Ancient Egyptians for its exquisite aroma. Today, aromatherapists often recommend Spikenard to calm, relax and decrease stress. For those suffering from anxiety, Spikenard can soothe the nerves and quiet the mind. A soft aromatic herb, Spikenard is closely related to the common valerian (Valeriana officinalis) and the Indian valerian (V. wallichii). The root of Spikenard is put through a steam distillation process to extract the essential oil. There are several other similar species, notably the Chinese spikenard which is also used to produce an essential oil. Spikenard should not be confused with Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) which has a similar name but is an entirely different plant.
