Pre-Columbian Discoveries of America

This 6,300 word essay, originally published in 1890, artfully lays out the case for European contact with the New World before Columbus. The author presents a convincing argument that Columbus was not the first to reach the Americas and offers extensive notations for further research.



Author Edward Cantwell (1826-1891) was an attorney, historian, and veteran of both the Mexican and Civil War. A graduate of Harvard University, he wrote and lectured frequently on legal issues. In his later years he lived in Utica, NY, and was an active member of the Oneida Historical Society.



The text has been painstakingly reproduced from the original document. Blatant typographical errors have been corrected but quaint spellings of the era have been preserved.
