Head lice have been documented as early as 8,000 B.C. Archeologists found a nit (lice egg) on the hair of a 10,000-year old mummy in South America. Presently, in the United States there is 6 to 12 million reported cases of head lice--its no wonder some of our common language is derived from these long-time parasites such as nit-picking, nitwit, and reviewing something with a fine-tooth comb.
