This is Volume II of "Locomotive Practice" in the "Railway Library" series, edited by Thomas Russell. This volume stands on its own and is devoted entirely to the steam locomotive. It covers locomotive inspection and repair, terminal drop pits, counterbalancing locomotives, water treatment and boiler washing, a step-by-step explanation of how locomotives were constructed, a section on Lima locomotives, and a chapter on examinations. Clearly written, it provides guidance for anyone constructing or repairing a steam engine. It is subtitled "A Practical Textbook for the Instruction of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen, Hostlers, and others in Railway Employ, Interested in the Operation, Care and Maintenance of Freight and Passenger Locomotives" and was aimed at those who wished to rise through the ranks through home study.
