HISTORY OF KHIVA TEMPLE
June 18, 1920, the Khiva Shrine Club, under the jurisdiction of Moslah Temple, Fort Worth, headed by George Stapleton, P. P. of Moslah Temple, Khiva Drum Corps A. W. Ball, Captain, and a number of Shriners, entrained for Portland, Oregon, with a petition to the Imperial Council bearing the names of 542 Shriners, requesting a Shrine Temple in Amarillo.
It was said that the Drum Corps paraded and made so much noise during the Imperial Sessions that Khiva was granted a charterto hush them up. At any rate, the delegation returned with the charter, U.D., dated June 24, 1920, and plans were under way for the organization of the new Temple, which occurred September 2nd, 1920, with 647 Charter Members.
Two outstanding events occurred at the Imperial Council in Portland. One was the granting of the charter for Khiva. The other was a resolution by the Imperial Potentate, W. Freland Kendrick, P. P. of Lulu Temple, Philadelphia, for the establishment of Shriner Hospitals for crippled children. This resolution was adopted and thus our Hospital program was started.
Returning from Portland, the organization of a band underthe direction of E. R. Humphreys, a patrol with Captain Walter Irvin, 1 st Lieutenant Guy Sander, 2nd Lieutenant Dr. L. V. Cradit, and a numberof Shrine Clubs in the Territory, which comprised 39 counties in the Panhandle followed. Application was also made for membership in the Texas Shrine Council.
Other uniformed units and Shrine Clubs followed. Khiva Temple "underdispensation" was officially set in motion on September 2,1920. A Divan headed by Illustrious Potentate George Stapleton, Past Potentate of Moslah Temple in Forth Worth, and a 33 degree Scottish Rite Mason, opened the Temple for "business and economy" and Khiva Temple was on the way to making history in the Texas Panhandle.
