• CUT AND HAMMERED BY HAND: An oil drum is flattened, the design is drawn straight onto the steel, and the whole scene is chiseled out with hammer and chisel rather than cut by machine. Palm fronds, trunks and island shapes are then tooled to raise texture across the surface, so the piece catches light at different angles as you cross the room.
• ONE RECYCLED STEEL DRUM: The metal is a discarded steel drum given a second life, flattened and opened into a flat round panel roughly 24 in across. Because each piece is worked by hand, the finished size can vary by as much as 2 in and painted colors differ between pieces. A raised mark on the front often shows where the artist signed the back.
• SIMPLE TO MOUNT: Light for its size and easy to put up. Your sculpture may arrive with a hang tab; if not, the open cutouts in the design take two small head nails, which is all a panel of 24 in or under needs. Wipe the surface clean with a dry or barely damp cloth, and outdoors give it a coat of clear enamel spray once a year to hold the painted finish.
