• SUNSET SANDS RECTANGLE: An oblong felt trivet in yellow and white, bright enough to work as a decorative table mat and substantial enough to take a hot casserole straight from the oven. Each rectangle is felted by hand in Nepal, which is what gives the surface its distinct pebbled texture and slight irregularity. The yellow reads as sunlit rather than acidic against pale wood.
• FINE WOOL, AZO-FREE DYES: Made from fine New Zealand wool dyed with azo-free pigments, then worked through the traditional felting cycle of scrubbing, rolling and rinsing with soapy water before drying and shaping. That slow process is what produces felt durable enough for hot dishes and daily handling. Fine wool is also what gives the mat its soft hand and its weight on the table.
• APPROXIMATELY 10 X 14 IN: At roughly 14 in x 10 in, the mat doubles as a placemat, a hot pad for serving dishes, or a wool desk mat sitting under a laptop or keyboard, which makes it useful well beyond the kitchen. Spot clean as needed with a damp cloth, and do not machine wash or tumble dry the felt. Few mats move between a desk and a dinner table this easily.
• DESK OR DINING SURFACE: The yellow and white palette lifts a neutral desk as readily as a dining table, pairing with stoneware, linen and pale wood without overpowering them. The rectangle shape suits long serving dishes and platters, and the piece itself makes a cheerful Christmas, hostess or new-home gift. Yellow is also a rarer choice than grey or cream on a table.
• NEPALI WOMEN'S COOPERATIVE: Handmade by a Fair Trade women's cooperative in Nepal, where felting provides sustainable livelihoods rather than anonymous piecework, and where each mat is finished by the person who shaped it. Global Crafts is a member of the Fair Trade Federation, and no two mats come out identical. The yellow and white here were dyed and rolled by that cooperative.
